The very extensive SEO tool can be accessed online via and contains tools with which you can optimize your complete SEO strategy in detail.

From keyword research to backlinks, technical SEO, competition studies, positioning matrixes, social media trackers, and content analysis, you can’t imagine it’s in SEMrush.

We provide an in-depth SEMrush review in this informational piece to help you choose an SEO tool.

What is SEMrush?

The name says it all, provided you know what SEM means; Search Engine Marketing, or search engine marketing.

SEMrush consists of a combination of handy tools with which you can map out and implement your search engine marketing strategies in detail. SEMrush consists of the following parts;

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  • Local SEO (Local SEO)
  • Advertising (SEA, or Search Engine Advertising)
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Content Marketing
  • Competitive Research

Within each of these parts are categories, which are in turn broken down into the final tools.

1. SEO-tools review

SEMrush’s SEO tool consists of four categories; competitive research, keyword research, link building (backlinks), rank tracking (position tracking), and On-Page & Tech SEO (technical SEO). Each category consists of a number of tools that we will all explain.

Competitive research

Competitive research is about competition research and the tools that fall within this are therefore to compare the SEO of your website with that of competitors.

This ranges from keywords to backlinks and the number of visitors. Within the SEO segment, the following tools are classified as competitive research tools.

Domain overview

In the SEMrush domain overview, you will find an overview of the SEO performance of a website as a kind of dashboard.

This is a summary of all the SEO tools that we are going to cover and is therefore ideal for quickly gaining insight into the SEO performance of a website.

You can effectively analyze any website, including your competitors’. You only have to enter a URL after which the data is retrieved from the SEMrush database.

Traffic analytics

You might compare your website’s traffic to that of competitors using the SEMrush traffic analytics (traffic analysis) tool.

In addition to the number of visitors and relevant KPIs (critical performance indicators), such as the number of unique visitors and the bounce rate, you will also find the sources of traffic, the best-performing pages, the geographical distribution (where do visitors come from), the performance of subdomains in the field of SEO, and there is a bulk analysis tool that allows you to analyze and compare up to 200 domains at once.

If you want to analyze competitors on such a large scale, you need to purchase a larger package from SEMrush.

Organic research

Organic research stands for organic research. By organic, we mean unpaid traffic in online marketing.

Traffic from Google that did not come to the site through the ads is called “organic traffic.”

In this extensive overview of  SEMrush organic research, you will find all statistics about your organic positions on Google. Here you will find the following insights;

Keyword gap

You may use the SEMrush keyword gap (keyword difference tool) to analyze your website and competitors’ websites to determine how many keywords overlap.

And more importantly, you can also see how many and which keywords do not overlap with your competitors.

In this scenario, evaluate and compare backlinks to your website from your immediate competitors.

You can see which backlinks you are missing, the number of backlinks, and the quality of the backlinks.

You can then draw new prospects from this for your link-building strategy.

Keyword research

After the online competitive research tools, we arrive at perhaps the most important and most popular SEO tool in our SEMrush review. The keyword research. This category consists of four keyword tools.

Keyword overview

With the keyword overview of SEMrush, you can do an extensive analysis per keyword.

You will see all the statistics and data for the keyword you entered with regard to the Google search engine. Volumes, competitiveness, number of results per nation, search trends, keyword variants, inquiries, similar keywords, and actual search results are all shown.

With this overview, you can do an extensive analysis at the keyword level.


You can also enter up to a hundred keywords at a time in the SEMrush keyword overview and then do a bulk analysis.

Your keyword list shows the most important data, such as the search volume, the trend, the keyword difficulty percentage, the cost per click (CPC), the competition on the keyword, the SERP features, and the total number of search results.

This tool makes it possible to quickly analyze your keyword lists.

Keyword magic tool

With the SEMrush keyword magic tool, you can enter a word after which SEMrush shows all keywords with the word you entered.

The data that is displayed is the same as with the keyword overview tool mentioned above.

There is a small, but also a big difference between these tools.

Wherewith the keyword overview tool you get statistics of the keywords or keyword list you entered, with the keyword magic tool you get new suggestions based on the word you typed.

Keyword manager

With the SEMrush keyword manager, you can create lists in which you can add up to a thousand keywords per list.

Then, when using the other tools within SEMrush, you can add the keywords that come up in them, for example in a competition analysis or the keyword magic tool, to one of your keyword lists.

This way you can keep your keywords organized. In our case, we have keyword lists per customer, but you could also distinguish your keywords. based on languages, services, business units, locations, product categories, or even products.

Organic traffic insights

With the SEMrush organic traffic insights tool, you can analyze all projects that you have set up in SEMrush, i.e. websites, in terms of organic traffic in one overview.

You will see a list of websites followed by the number of sessions from the search engines and a percentage indicating the growth or decline.

It is a short and concise overview intended for quick insight. When you click on a website, you get an extensive report with a list of all the pages.

You can then see for all pages on which keywords the page ranks, the traffic, the quality of the traffic, and whether objectives are being achieved.

The report provides an overall insight into the SEO performance of your pages.

In addition to keywords, backlinks are an important factor for SEO. The more sites with a high Authority Score link to your website, the more important Google will find your site. Below we discuss the backlink tools of SEMrush.

The SEMrush backlink analytics tool, like the keyword overview and domain overview, allows you to examine your website’s backlink performance at a glance.

You will find the number of backlinks, the number of referring domains, and the authority score, among other things.

You can also analyze the quality of your backlinks, where exactly they come from, and what the composition of your backlinks looks like.

Backlink audit

In the SEMrush backlink audit tool, you can analyze the status of the current backlinks.

Finally, here you can monitor and manage the removal of bad backlinks.

Link building tool

Prospects should be approached via the SEMrush link building tool, after which you can quickly approach them using SEMrush’s built-in services.

You can then also manage and monitor the process so that you can see which of your prospects opened the request, who accepted the request, and whether there were any auto-replies.

Furthermore, with the link-building tool, you can also indicate per prospect which strategy you want to apply.

The name of the SEMrush bulk analysis tool says it all. With this tool, you can analyze 200 websites in one go in terms of backlinks.

You may instantly compare your website to all of your competitors or industry experts to see where you stand.

Rank tracking

The rank tracking category includes rank tracking tools or tools with which you can monitor your positions in Google. Within SEMrush, there are three tools that make this possible.

Position tracking

With the SEMrush position tracking tool, you can see at a glance how your keyword positions are progressing in the specified period.

You can see whether your visibility is growing or falling, as well as traffic and your average position.

You can also see per position range how many keywords you have within that range, how many are new, and how many have disappeared.

The SEMrush position tracking tool uses the following keyword positions; the top 3 keywords (1-3), the top 10 keywords (4-10), the top 20 keywords (11-20), and the Top 100 keywords (21-100).

Furthermore, the position tracking tool is divided into all kinds of smaller analysis tools.

For example, there is an overview of the rankings distribution of you and your competitors, the ranking per page, cannibalization within your own site, competition discovery, devices and locations, and finally, featured snippets.

All these tools ultimately aim to get higher positions in Google.

With the SEMrush sensor, the vitality of the day, in the form of position changes, is displayed as well as the history (30 days) per industry and featured snippets.

Google updates have a major influence on this.

Furthermore, overviews can be opened containing your own sites, winners & losers (winners & losers) and you can filter by the device (desktop & mobile). Because the tool does not yet contain a Dutch database, it is currently less interesting if you have a Dutch site.

Listing management

With SEMrush listing management, you can make your business even more visible and attract new customers.

Because this tool is not yet available for the Dutch market, we will leave it as it is.
